Garden Design for New Build Properties: Where to Start

New build gardens often start as a blank slate. Here is our expert guide to turning a bare plot into a beautiful, established-looking garden.

A new build property offers an exciting opportunity — a completely blank canvas to create exactly the garden you want. But where do you start?

Understanding What You Have

Before designing, assess your site:

  • **Aspect** — which direction does the garden face? This determines sun and shade patterns throughout the day
  • **Soil condition** — new build soils are often poor, compacted or contaminated with building debris
  • **Drainage** — new build gardens frequently have drainage issues
  • **Services** — establish the location of gas, water, electricity and drainage runs before any excavation
  • Setting a Brief

Consider how you want to use your garden. A family with young children has very different needs from an empty nester seeking a low-maintenance retreat. Consider:

  • Entertainment space
  • Children's play areas
  • Lawn area (or artificial grass)
  • Growing space — raised beds, kitchen garden
  • Storage — bikes, outdoor toys, garden tools
  • Parking — a second car or visitor parking?
  • Soil Preparation

This is the single most important practical step in new build garden design. Good topsoil should be imported to a depth of 300mm minimum for planting areas, after removing any rubble and breaking up compaction.

    Designing for Maturity

New gardens can look sparse initially. Strategies to accelerate the established feel:

  • **Invest in larger specimen plants** for immediate impact
  • **Choose fast-growing boundary plants** for privacy — cherry laurel, photinia, bamboo
  • **Mix planting sizes** — some larger, some smaller
  • **Consider semi-mature trees** for immediate structure
  • Budget Priorities

If budget is limited, prioritise in this order:

    1. Hard landscaping (patio, paths) — the skeleton of the garden

    2. Soil preparation and lawn or planting

    3. Boundaries — fencing, hedging, walls

    4. Features — garden room, pergola, water feature — in subsequent phases
